Here's one song each from my favoriteist albums of the 00's. I forgot Joanna Newsom and her shapely buttocks. Sorry Joanna!
Something that really bummed me out in the 00's: Acetone's lead singer killed himself. Just doesn't make any sense to me. They were awesome and had a really unique quietLOUDquiet sound.

So you know what's awesome? Doing 85 on a deserted back road surrounded by Utah scrub and blasting "Skates" by Hayden.
MAN, I'd forgotten what a barn-burner that album is. It's nearly perfect and highly recommended. Awkward, self-conscious, and featuring songs about: being hot for 16-year-olds, how hard it is to talk to girls, calling in sick to work, fucking up romantic overtures, shoving rocks up one's nose, not being able to die in your dreams, and Susan Smith. And "Skates" which is just weird, sad and, uh...passionate? It's about ice skates. Sort of.
And you know who was really cute? Tawney Reed.
I love that dude to her right. I've got a feeling he has wood.

I was going to post a video of them, but they're pretty dorky lookin'. I mean, the guitar player's cute. But all that gothiness and button punching betrays how the finished product sounds.
So I'm going to post a Davila 666 video instead. My God. They're just the best, too.
I'm taking another two weeks off from this thing. Partly because we're going to Utah. Yes. UTAH.

Well hey there! This turned out really well. I hope you like it as much as I did.
Neil Sedaka has a delightful new children's album and that's where the name of this mix came from. It also features "Where the Toys Are" and "Waking Up Is Hard To Do." It does not feature this [super fucking creepy] song.
What else, what else?
- Oh. Thanks, Ben, for lending me this which is awesome. Congratulations on your nuptuals!
- Look, I'm not goofing around with that Neulander. It's my favorite Eurotrash album ever and I listened to that song in a loop while driving around aimlessly one very sad day in Cincinnati last year.
- That Red Sovine song is endearingly racist. I bet he was hell at family gatherings.
- "Strip Club" is my favorite cover. Ever.
- I'm sort of suddenly obsessed with Teddy Parker and...OMFG WATCH THIS:
Anyways, here's the list:
Side A 1. 1,000 Clowns - Kitty Kat Max 2. Brenda Holloway - A Favor For A Girl (With A Love Sick Heart) 3. The Grifters - Covered With Flies 4. Meic Stevens - Shw' mae? Shw' mae? 5. Because of school and other things this got kind of Iron Chef in that I just threw a bunch of songs together. And I fear I made shrimp cakes with butt sauce.
But, still. There's some good stuff in here. I swear!
Three songs come from this. It's a weird little compilation of Turkish folks living in Germany and making Turkish-y music while singing in German. The combination is oddly endearing but the songs here are the only ones I really like. (Psst. I wouldn't buy it.)
Oh. And this is my second favorite music video ever:
And that Charles Wilp album is terrible. Don't buy that, either.
I'm not making you want to listen to this, am I?

Telegraph Avenue - Tookie Tookie 12. Death In Vegas & Hope Sandoval - Help Yourself
Oh. Hey. Can you do me a favor? If you know what the instrument featured in that Ensaio de Escola song is called, could you email me? It's just about my favorite instrument, but I've been unsuccessful when trying to google image "Brazilian instrument that goes 'hoo-a-ha-ha.'"
It's probably not going to sound like it, but this mix came from two places:
1.
There's this Stephen Crane poem I really like. Here it is:
I saw a man pursuing the horizon; Round and round they sped. I was disturbed at this; I accosted the man. "It is futile," I said, "You can never — " "You lie," he cried, And ran on.
I think I like it for the wrong reason. I'm pretty sure that Stephen Crane is the "I" and that he doesn't approve (or want us to approve) of the runner's actions.
But, see, I like the runner. A lot.
2.
There's a scene in that Away Me Go movie where the wife asks, "Are we fuck ups?" And the husband says that they're not. But the scene ends with her saying, "I think we're fuck ups."
I kind of feel like a huge fuck up lately. Need to tend to that.
But you didn't need to know any of that. What you need to know is that this sounds good. Really!
Notes:
- Two absolutely huge favorites here: "Make it Betta" and "The Dawn of Understanding." The Angel made film music, I guess, and then a great album. The Long Goodbye were a one-off project featuring Melissa Farris from Tuscadero. I need to make a mix of the axis of awesome that was Melissa Farris, Margaret McCartney and Evelyn Hurley. Imma do that in the next two weeks.
- Noel Harrison's shade of pale is really, really white.
- I kinda wanted to upload that Bebe and Serge album, but I think it's still for sale. Worth getting.
- When I heard Nicole Atkins, I thought, "Do we really need someone else who sounds like Regina Spektor?" And then I thought, "Yep."
- What the hell is going on in that Spencer Davis Group song? Who's looking at whom? Who is "he"? Why's he looking at them? Am I dumb? I so don't get what's going on.
- Oh neat. The video for Big Stick's "Drag Racing":
Anyway, here's the list:

Dig Mos Def, rockin' the Selda sample. Yeah! That whole album's great.
Wim Mertens is a crazy Belgian who sings in a language he made up. That track sums up where I'm at right now, in tone and title.
The metaphorical curtain is calling for me. I'm glad it's on its way up and not down, but it's still terrifying. I have to figure out what I'm going to do with my life and soon.
But. Until then, hopefully there'll be more of this:
Fair warning: the next two weeks are going to SUH-HUH-UCK school-wise, so expect either flakiness or a complete disappearance. I'll be back, though.

If you haven't visited Zen Running Order, it's a really nice place. Lots of folks who love music putting together great mixes.
They're having a mixathon and the theme is "Autobiography." So I got my self-absorption on and coughed this up. All of these songs were, at one time or another, really important.
You know what my favorite music video of all time is? This one:
Here's the list and some notes:

Of course, this violates time constraints. Nostalgia > rules.
- Whenever I hear that Thee Michelle Gun Elephant song, I think they're singing "Sloe Gin, Baby." Which is stupid, because what they're actually singing is THE NAME OF THE SONG.
- "Lying" is a Martina Topley Bird cover from her [excellent] album Quixotic.
Side A 1. The Jimmy Stuarts - Transformers Theme 2. The Hombres - Let It Out (Let It All Hang Out) 3. Plastilina Mosh - Niño Bomba 4. Nina Hynes - Swallow 5. DMZ - Mighty Idy 6. And when I was making this, I think I was filing it under the vague heading: "Dating sucks."
But you know what? Dating doesn't suck. One good trial obliterates all errors.
So. When I made this, I didn't have any soul. But today I'm full to bursting with soul.
Next week's entry is likely to be a lot more joyful.
But this one's isn't bad.
Erika Wennerstrom has the most amazing voice.

Oh. Hey. Christine? If you ever find this? I hate you. Seriously.
That said, this mix turned out pretty well! There's actually new stuff in here. Occasioned by the latest issue of The Big Takeover, which is my favorite place to read about music. Jack Rabid's kind of a windbag [pot...kettle-ed.], but his heart's in the right place. And the reviews section is pretty much the size of the yellow pages. They uncover seriously cool stuff. Screw Pitchfork. Get that magazine.
What else to say? Well, the new Dinosaur doesn't suck which was a pleasant surprise. And I know that Magik Markers isn't a crowd pleaser, but it made me wistful for all the terrible things on Homestead in the late 80's. Like Jad Fair or something. If you bail there, though, you're going to miss Plunt. You don't want to miss Plunt. No, no.
And what's with all the Sparklemouse Dangerhorse lately? I never would picture them being friends.
I'm not complaining.

I feel like I'm getting more and more laconic on this thing. I guess I feel like writing about music is like fucking about dancing. For me. Others do it really well.
I'll just say that I didn't have high hopes for this one, but it turned around into all kinds of fun and I listened to it a lot. I hope you like it.
Highlights for me: that Randy Rice album is mindblowing...like eavesdropping on someone's therapy session set to music...and I'm going to link to it on the right hand side. And I realize Zoroaster won't be for everyone, but if it's for you? Get. That. Album. It's one of my favorite things from this year.
And, yes, that is Nancy Walker from the Bounty commercials.

Did you know that there was an HR Pufnstuff movie and that it had a soundtrack?
I didn't.
Oh anyway. I was really happy to see Obits are touring and my favorite local band The Lights are opening. You should see them if you can. Or just listen to them.
The rest of the mix was just supposed to be "fun." And it mostly is. "A Promise" isn't, but it was in my head all week. Wonder why.

I got this over the weekend and literally listened to it six times straight through because it's just nutty good except when it's bad and then it's even nuttier.
E.G. The sexiest song about the alphabet I've ever heard:
I love that he actually sings "If you want to love me you have to know your ABCs." Who exactly has he been dating? [Edit: Wikipedia says he's from Oklahoma. So. There you go.]
I also love when his voice gets all muppety and growlly. When he sings "ALLLLOOOOONNE" he makes the same noise my cat makes when she's about to puke.
Whole album is just as good.
Here's the list:
1. Never Gonna Work 2. Bring Your Lovin' 3. Tiger In The Closet 4. Red, White And Blue 5. L. A. Town 6. Heartbreak Hotel 7. Big Red 8. Look Down That Lonesome Road 9. I'll Be There 10. - German songs. (Probably occasioned by this guy's excellent postings.)
- The new Future of the Left about a billion times because it shreds. The only song I don't like is the first single, and it seems like a weird choice for a first single because it sounds nothing like anything else on the album. All the other songs are fairly skull crushing.
So. Put it all together and you get this mix.
Is it me, or does Dorthe look kind of psychotic?
Here's a tracklist:

Sometimes alcohol + internet = awesome. I woke up one morning to find a folder on my desktop and it contained 90 minutes of 60's radio promo spots. I have no recollection from where they came. So I either blacked out or I have the BEST COMPUTER VIRUS EVER.
Here's an example. The Rolling Stones shilling for Rice Krispies:
So anyway, I tossed some of my favorites into a mix that needed some help and it turned out to be just the thing and I enjoyed listening to it a few times and hope you feel the same way.
And hey. No bailing on "Diana." I know it gets off to a rocky start, but it errupts into this great chorus and I swear that thing gets stuck in my head for days on end.

I used to work across the street from this really shitty record store. It's dangerous for me to be that close to one every day, because I always end up pumping a ton of cash into any record store, no matter how shitty. Because I'm an idiot.
The one good thing about this store was that the owner would sell these "imports" that were actually just bootlegs he was burning en masse. I bought this one and it had a wicked skip and I took it back and he was, like, "Oh. Uh. We may be getting another copy in...uh...tomorrow. Sorry. You never know what you're going to get with these 'imports.'" Sure dude. Whatever.
But it's a decent live performance from Glastonbury circa '95. Includes some radio recordings as well.

This seemed like a good idea at the time, but, re-listening to it, I'm not so sure.
I am sure that this Tullycraft video is fun, though.
Anyway, here's the tracklist:
Side A 1. Spacemen 3 - Mary Ann 2. Unrest - Cath Carroll 3. Lee Hazlewood - Kari 4. The Damned - Melody Lee 5. The Quests - Jesamine 6. Slint - Carol 7. Tullycraft - Josie 8. Helium - Lucy 9. Time Is On My Side 11. Free Money 12. The Boy I'm Going To Marry 13. Ask The Angels 14. High Over The Hills/Radio Ethiopia 15. White Christmas
It's weird that two of their best songs never made it to any album. This was released on Bob Mould's "Singles Only Label" and it neatly encapsulates everything that made Scrawl so Scrawlingly good. "Misery" is a mewly mess and it makes me want to hug Marcy Mays. (Actually, I always kind of want to hug Marcy Mays).
And "Just Plain Bad" actually makes me bang my head like a dumbass during the bridge. Listen:
Back to randomness. Highlights: bluegrass Modest Mouse cover, Dutch folk with kazoo, angsty anthem to salted pork, Alley Oop on a handful of Vicodin, Bill Callahan being creepy, and the best song about the apocalypse ever.
There's nothing else to say really. Here's the tracklist:
Side A 1. Iron Horse - Dark Center 2. Add N To (X) - Metal Fingers In My Body 3. The Garnets - Indian Uprising 4. Elly & Rikkert - Kauwgomballenboom 5. Obits - Pine On 6. Janeen Brady & The Brite Singers - I'm A Mormon 11. Kaleidoscope - Lie To Me 12. Bill Callahan - My Friend 13. Hazel O'Connor - The Eighth Day
I'm really happy that the most downloaded album from this site is this one. The fact that this band didn't make it is a total head scratcher.
Here's their follow-up. It's a collection of demos, outtakes, and live stuff. So it's a way different experience than the studio effort. Muted and muddy and in some ways more personal. Long, compelling instrumentals and great covers. Just a perfect album. These people never wasted a note.
Huh. It's weird to me that these guys aren't getting more internet love. To me, they really stood out from the herd of 80's punks. They were raw and speedy, but the singing and lyrics were a lot more emotive than most. Not quite emo [thank God] but I think stuff like this [unfortunately] paved the way. Some tasty bass licks, too.
Did I just say "tasty bass licks?" I should stop typing right now.
- Finally dumping Rapidshare and their ilk. All links are now live and hopefully permanent. (Except for Mix Tape #1, which I didn't save...if anyone has it, send it to me, yo.)
- Probably occasioned by Wanda, I'm realizing I have a thing for low-budget movies from the 70's about losers. Here's one. And, holy crap, you can watch this one online.
- I was kind of kidding about that "Oh Boo Hoo" thing at first, but, no, really. I've listened to it for about 15 hours now...
5/24 - 5/30
- Throwing everything Jason Molina did up through Pyramid Electric Company into a playlist, calling it "Oh Boo Hoo" and listening to it non-stop while walking around in the bright, beautiful sunshine.
- Holy crap. I was going through a pile of old CDs and found this which Derek burned for me and it's just awesome. I should email him. And you should download that.
